I’m a bit of a smoker – cigars, mostly, and only when I feel like alienating all my friends – so I figured I’d try out some of these “electronic” cigarettes. I’ve already reviewed one similar to Green Nicotine, the SuperSmoker. However, Ploom is a bit different.

Ploom uses a little butane heater ignited by a piezo spark generator that heats the smoky goodness and vaporizes it. Obviously you have to use the pods so you can’t put your own stuff in there – I’d use fiberglass, personally – and the flavors include Cafe Noir and Blue Tea. Pretty hippy dippy.

Ploom is aiming for the fancy pants alterna-crowd – it costs $39.95 and pods cost about $5.95 for 12 – while GreenNicotine is going for the “folks who want to smoke on a plane” crowd. It costs $149 and each 10-pack of replacements costs $39. They also have a disposable cigar model for $40 which comes from crazy town.

If you’re a smoker and you’re trying to quit or you’re a smoker and you’re jonesing for a cig, these things make work for you. Check local laws and bylaws before you start blowing Blue Tea fumes into cops faces, however, friend.

As a bonus, I’ll send the GreenNicotine kit to a random commenter. I won’t send the Ploom because I already sucked on it.

We already managed to go hands-on with ASUS’ Eee PC 1015P netbook at CeBIT back in March, but the company has been relatively quiet about it since then, and hasn’t even offered so much as a hint of a release date. It looks like that could now be coming sooner rather than later, however, as the netbook has just passed through the FCC and left with its seal of approval. In case you missed it, the netbook itself is part of ASUS’ Seashell line, and packs a 10.1-inch screen, an Atom N450 processor and, perhaps most notably, a promised 14 hours of battery life — keyword “promised.”

Gaming on Linux? That’s not something we hear every day just yet, but it looks like the good folks at Valve might be considering a penguin revolution. In one of the latest beta releases of Steam for Mac, Phoronix spotted a mention of the open-source platform in the launcher script, and we were also able to verify this code ourselves. Furthermore, the eagle-eyed Linux blog has previously seen a handful of evidence hinting Linux compatibility for Valve’s Source gaming engine. We’re probably still a ways off from any announcement (if ever) so for now, let’s just leave the guys alone — we don’t want to distract them from bringing the Portal goodness to our Macs now, do we?

Oops. Those two pics looks similar, eh? And if we’re not mistaken, Microsoft’s Pink phone is rumored to be made by Sharp. This wirerame for model PB10ZU just hit the FCC looking every bit the “Turtle” device that was leaked last year. Of course, seeing Sharp behind Pink is only natural since it was one of Danger’s manufacturers of choice for the Sidekick — a team wholly ingested by Microsoft a few years ago. Looking through the FCC docs we see that it’s a slider with dual-band CDMA, EVDO Rev. A, Bluetooth, and WiFi. We also see reference to a second model, the PB20ZU (aka, “pure“?), although that model is lacking any detail whatsoever. The tastiest of FCC docs are being withheld by request until March 29th — right in line with a rumored spring launch. Hopefully Microsoft will have more to say about Project Pink and Windows 7 devices here in Barcelona so stay tuned.

[Thanks, Jeremy F.]
