Commenter seguetonowhere points out a useful Android keyboard feature I missed in my Froyo rundown: if you swipe your finger over the top of the Android 2.2 default keyboard, it extends two more rows to display keys for common punctuation and numbers. More »

Google’s Chrome browser is proving increasingly popular, while work continues on the Chrome OS project to build a minimal, browser-based interface for netbooks. Lifehacker spoke with Chrome user interface design team developer Glen Murphy – an Aussie now working at Google HQ in California – to discuss the future directions Chrome and Chrome OS will take, why the Chrome Web Store is so important, and the relative important of touch screens and keyboard shortcuts. More »

A note about pricing: Every basic package offered by the companies included in today’s Hive is free. Among those offering paid upgrades, we selected the upgrade directly above the basic package for our price inclusion. Make sure to check out the company sites for additional information and to see which, if any, of the upgrades is necessary for your needs.

The test document we used is the D*I*Y Planner 3.0 Handbook, an excellent resource of organization-related printouts.

Sumatra PDF (Windows, Free)

Sumatra PDF is an ultra-lightweight and open-source portable application. The emphasis with Sumatra PDF is not on the number of features and the wide-ranging abilities of the application, but instead on speed. It loads almost instantly, renders pages extremely quickly, and thanks to a huge number of keyboard shortcuts, you can zip through nearly any document with ease. Sumatra PDF, thanks to a lack of frills and extraneous features, is a great candidate for a portable drive or for in-browser use for someone who wants quick-loading PDF files without the lag caused by features they won’t ever use.

Preview (Mac, Free)

Preview is Apple’s free PDF viewer, built into OS X. It’s no mystery many Mac users have no need to step beyond the built into tool. Preview has quite a few features often only found in commercial PDF software, like the ability to drag and drop pages between documents, page extraction, encryption, and text annotation. In addition to viewing PDF files, Preview can display over two dozen other file formats making it quite a versatile little viewer.

Foxit (Windows/Linux, Basic: Free/Pro Pack: $39.99)

Foxit is a polished Acrobat-alternative that, on top of cleanly displaying PDF files with a minimal interface, also has a host of handy features—all packed into a lightweight 6MB package. Foxit loads immediately, without any splash page or lag from plugins loading. Reading PDFs is just as snappy, and in-text pictures and charts render quickly. When filling out PDF forms, you can save your progress in the form and return later to finish filling it out. While both the free and the Pro version allow you to annotate text, insert graphics and drawings, and insert links, the free version adds a Foxit stamp on each page you annotate; the pro version removes the marking. Foxit is available as a portable application.

Adobe Acrobat (Windows/Mac/Linux, Basic: Free, Pro: $299 )

Adobe Reader is Adobe’s default offering for viewing PDFs. Acrobat enjoys widespread popularity as a result of being offered by the company that created the PDF. For light PDF users, it’s a more than adequate tool, although frequent users may seek to try a lighter alternative to get rid of the long load times and the lag that can occur when Acrobat loads within a web browser pane. You can attach sticky notes to pages and highlight text for your own review. More advanced features, like PDF creation, saving PDFs in other formats, and the ability to merge PDF files, are only available with an upgrade the Acrobat Standard for $299.

PDF-XChange (Windows, Basic: Free, Pro: $34)
PDF-XChange is another Adobe-alternative in today’s Hive that boasts snappy load times and basic functionality that outpaces the basic functionality of Adobe Reader. With PDF-XChange you can open and browse PDF documents, perform simple page annotations with drawings and text, and type outside of preset form boxes by using the PDF-XChange typewriter tool to place text wherever you want. Advanced features like reorganizing pages and text extraction are only available in with the Pro upgrade. PDF-Xchange is available as a portable application.

Now that you’ve had a chance to look over the candidates—and hopefully get a chance to test them out, since so many are conveniently portable!—it’s time to cast your vote in the poll below:

So here’s some low-hassle ways to get cleaner reading, new tab features, and other goodies.

Note: Despite the one-click registration process, these Firefox extensions are still unapproved by Firefox’s maker, Mozilla, and require the standard warning to use at your own risk, because they’re both unofficial and not tested by as wide an audience as for approved extensions. Still, many experimental extensions are often just in the queue for approval, so it can be worth living on the bleeding edge for a great new add-on.

Identify

Are you a social snooper? Do you like to (or, for your work, have to) search out contact information and related pages whenever you stumble across a fairly intriguing person? Identity does the leg work for you. Hit Alt+I (that’s an “i,” by the way) on any home page—blog, Twitter profile, Flickr stream, etc.—and the extension uses Google’s Social Graph API to crawl around that person’s inter-connected pages and return all their links and any short bio information they’ve posted. Potentially stalker-iffic, but also a cool tool for an increasingly inter-connected web.

TidyRead

We showed you a bit of TidyRead’s smartphone-friendly bookmark power last week, but its Firefox extension could be a boon to anyone who likes to, or would like to, do some actual reading on their laptop or desktop—if it weren’t for all those ads, compressed, off-font text, and other distraction. TidyRead’s extension doesn’t require any clicks or keyboard shortcuts once you get it going. Its “Smart Mode” automatically converts any page with a centrally-focused block of text into a more readable format, from which you can modify the font, size, and margins (or go with what you set in TidyRead’s defaults). There’s also an “Allow List” and “Block List,” if you just want, say, the Washington Post and New Yorker to show up in more readable fashion, while letting Perez Hilton be as splashy/trashy as he wants.

Desktop

Until Mozilla makes their functional New Tab Page final in Firefox 3.5, anyone who wants something more than a blank background or a home page on their new tabs has do a little DIY configuration. Desktop lets you do exactly that, adding web page thumbnails, search boxes right from your installed search bar plug-ins, or even file links and previews from your own desktop. Everything’s either a “widget,” a “search,” or a “folder,” but it seems open-ended enough to inspire some pretty geeky new tab designs. From our rudimentary tests, it also seems to load pretty quickly, even with sites like Gmail thumbnailed. Don’t take our word (alone) for it, though—check out the DemoGirl blog’s screencast of setting up a Desktop new tab page:

WebReview

Along the same lines of Desktop, WebReview gives you a start page that’s a lot more functional than white nothingness, but this one’s a lot more automated. Tracking your browsing habits and site history (without reporting anything back over the net), WebReview gives you four categories of links on every new tab page: Recently Closed, Most Visited, Visited Daily, and Proposals for Today. The first three are kind of self-explanatory (and Visited Daily is a neat little psychological hack), but Proposals for Today is the neatest one. It looks at your browsing history across weekdays, weekends, and other date data, and figures out that if you, for instance, only head over to BoingBoing on weekends, well, it’s Saturday, so here’s a link. WebReview also offers actual charts, graphs, and organizational charts showing how you usually get from one page to another. If you’ve ever wanted to know way more about how you spend your time online, this here’s the extension for you.

Got an experimental extension that’s worth the beta-test burden? By all means, tell us about it in the comments, and tell us what you think of this batch as well.
