Feel free to contribute some of your own nostalgia.

In 1999, I was into photography, but not seriously. I’d had the obligatory Kodak Instamatic, a couple of cheap 35mm pocket cameras, and I had fun taking snapshots. I never really took it seriously, though, until I saw some pictures that a co-worker had taken of a sunset. Then I just had to have a digital camera.

But back in ‘99, your options for digital cameras were somewhat limited. You could pay $6,000 for a Nikon D1, but I had no intentions of doing that. Based on what a co-worker had, I ended up purchasing a Kodak DC-50. The DC-50 was quite advanced for its time. The sensor was a 0.38 megapixel CCD and took pictures at a 756×508 resolution. This was unusual, since most cameras at that point took pictures at a maximum of 640×480.

Most cameras were limited to internal memory back in those days, and while the DC-50 did have internal memory available, you were much better off using a compact flash card with a PCMCIA adapter. The lens was a 3x optical zoom, which covered a relatively wide range considering that it was physically contained inside the camera. You also didn’t have any way to view the pictures until you pulled them out of the camera. There was only a basic LCD on the back, which showed a few details to keep you informed of what is going on. There was no way to control the ISO, or the shutter speed, and the focus was completely automatic. But for the money, it was the most advanced digital camera you could get without spending more then you would for a car. I’ve still got some pictures from back in those days; you can check them out at the bottom of the page.

I fondly remember that camera, but I was certainly glad when I upgraded to something better. I wince when I see the image quality from back then, but it was a great starting point. I vaguely remember spending in the neighborhood of $150 for the DC-50 off of eBay — you can find them now for about $35. Of course, I shoot with a Nikon D300 now, which is in a whole different class.

This week at CrunchGear, we’re looking back at some of our favorite gadgets from the not-so-distant past — old phones, computers, media players, toys… those devices that still stand out in our memories despite their obsolescence. Feel free to contribute some of your own nostalgia.

The Samsung Trace, or SGH-T519, was not an especially capable phone. Oh, it had its little feature-phone games and a bright screen and all that, but it really only had two things going for it. One: sucker was (and still is) so thin you’d forget it was in your pocket, and two: you could spin that mother.

Look, there’s no other way to explain it, just watch the video.

See? I don’t have any other device, save perhaps a yoyo or top, that will spin like that. It’s because the highest point on the phone when it’s face-up is the little circular “OK” button, which also happens to be exactly in the center of the phone. And the phone just happens to be perfectly balanced so it doesn’t drag on one side.

Yeah, it’s kind of a weird reason to love a device, but it’s little things like this that breed affection with our devices — not the apps, not the firmware upgrades or storage capacity. The best features of many devices often aren’t listed.

Version 2, however, brings OPML import/export, sharing, and smart searching, finally giving it powers to rival its desktop counterparts.

If you were tempted by RSSOwl in the past, you may have been turned off by its inability to import feeds from other readers. Now, however, you can be set up and reading feeds exported from other readers within minutes. It also features a tabbed interface, so you don’t have to constantly close feeds, and a built-in browser for you to view the full content of any article. In addition, you can do away with the usual 3-pane view and combine the rightmost two, viewing the entire feed’s content in one pane, Google Reader style.

Possibly the coolest feature of RSSOwl, though, is searching. The app’s got so many ways to search that it’s a little overwhelming at first, but it’s extremely powerful down the line. You can have multiple different conditions to any given search and save your searches—not unlike the “smart playlist” feature of media players—and group feeds by specific attributes. You can also use this as a filter, automatically filing incoming articles into news bins (akin to folders in an email client), marking them as sticky (akin to flagging or starring), or applying labels (akin to…labels) for super organizational powers.

There are too many features to describe in detail—other highlights include sharing via services including Facebook, Twitter, or Digg, and notifications (that integrate with Growl in OS X)—so check out their full overview for more detailed information. However, despite the power behind this app, it still seems to be missing integration with Google Reader, something we’d really like to see—but if you’re not beholden to The Google for web-based RSS, this is definitely an app worth checking out.

RSSOwl is a free and open source download for all platforms. Thanks, Alin-Andrei!

Now here’s a good idea: a built-in GPS navigation system that’s actually priced to move. Co-developed with Bosch, Nissan has put together a $400 option with a 5-inch touhcscreen, Bluetooth support for phones, USB connectivity for media players, iPod integration, XM Satellite and NavTraffic. The Detroit News was certainly impressed, testing it on a new Sentra and calling it a moment where the benefits of the built-in nav systems outweigh the costs — although the display was maybe a bit too small for its liking. Look for it to these to hit in some of its lower-priced models starting this January. Hit up the source link for the full impressions.
